Jay Malone - A Comedy At The Carleton Father's Day Event!

Sunday, June 18th

What's funny about Father's Day? Jay Malone at The Carleton, that's what. As a father of three, Jay has a lot to say about the experience and a lot of that is funny. Don't buy dad another tie, or cufflinks, or sock-heads for his golf clubs, take him out for dinner and a few laughs instead! In case you need reminding, Father's Day is on Sunday, June 18th this year. Show time is 8 PM and tickets are $15 advanced or $20 at the door.

Jay Malone has been headlining comedy clubs across North America for years. In 2003 he performed in the Homegrown Competition at the JUST FOR LAUGHS Festival, taking first place! He was invited back the very next year for a gala, becoming the only performer to accomplish this in back to back years.

In 2005 Jay shot his first nationally televised comedy special, an hour long episode of “COMEDY NOW!” which was chosen to represent the long standing series as its 100th episode. The special was met with critical acclaim and led to Jay’s nomination in the “Best Male Stand-up Comic” category at the 2005 Canadian Comedy Awards.

In the interest of raising a family, Jay recently returned to his native Nova Scotia.

A great writer with excellent delivery and I love that he always has new, fresh and up to date material each time I see him. I pick Jay Malone to be on the “top ten” list of comedians in the near future.Sean Sullivan - The Ice House, Pasadena

Jay Malone is the strongest act of our yearly calendar….I wish I could headline him every week. Great writer who has also crafted a likeable stage persona that consistently delivers huge laughsJim Vanderburg - Laugh Resort, Toronto

Cassie Josephine & Gabriel Minnikin + Shannon Lyon & Steve Wood

Wednesday, June 21st

Gabriel Minnikin & Cassie Josephine headline a bill also featuring Ontario singer/songwriter Shannon Lyon and pedal steel player Steve Wood for a night of alt-country goodness at The Carleton on Wednesday, June 21st. Show time is 8 PM and admission is $10 at the door.

Cassie Josephine and Gabriel Minnikin are an Indie/Old-Country/Singer-Songwriter duo from Halifax, NS.  They released their first album together, Flower Country, on October 1, 2016.

Gabriel Minnikin was a founding member of acclaimed country outfit The Guthries and recorded his last solo album, Parakeets With Parasols, in Manchester, UK in 2012 and then headed back to East Coast Canada where he met Cassie just releasing her debut EP, Cutlery ’N’ Cryin. Now, these two songwriters share the stage, their music and a little house in Halifax.

Born and raised in Southern Ontario, Shannon Lyon began his musical career in 1990. Since 1994 Lyon has released 14 albums and has received critical acclaim in North America, Europe & Australia.

Jont & The Infinite Possibility + Friends - CD Release Show

Friday, June 30th

Our friends Jont & The Infinite Possibility release An Old Innocence at The Carleton Music Bar & Grill on Friday, June 30th. Show time is 10 PM and advanced tickets are $12 or you can pay $15 at the door.

3 years in the making, Jont & The Infinite Possibility's new album AN OLD INNOCENCE is finally released world-wide on Friday June 30th. To celebrate Jont and his band are coming back to the venue that has been a kind of home for Jont since he got here in 2012.

For those of you who don't know Jont, You are in for a treat. hailing originally from the UK, he has put out 8 albums, and his life is almost like a movie. He did the rock and roll thing in LA being managed by Tom Petty's management and then went back to the UK where Mumford and Son's managers managed him and put out his One Long Song EP in 2005. Since then he has put out several albums, had his music used more than once on Grey's Anatomy and even had the closing credits song in the hit movie Wedding Crashers.

More recently he has come to Halifax to be a dad and has been working away at his music here. Last year him and his band were selected to play INVENTIONS (three nights in a Halifax church playing their set with a 150 piece orchestra and choir). The new album (now beginning to get spins on CBC) is a classic singer-songwriter album, "fiercely its own thing, yet joyfully universal" (James Cook, Uncut).

For his album launch show, Jont will be filming the whole event and streaming it live HD to the world so that all the friends he has made through his music can enjoy the show. The dress code is bright colours / carnival / fancy dress / party time.... the night will be a total blast - a great friday night out dance party whether you've seen Jont before or not. A couple of other local bands will kick things off and Jont will take the stage at 11.

"Pure, unadulterated talent" - Michael Mee
"Shockingly Impressive" - Johnny K, The Fly
"musical MDMA" - Julissa McGregor, Cottonwool

Keith Harkin (Celtic Thunder)

Wednesday, August 23rd

After one false start a few years ago, Celtic Thunder's front man - Keith Harkin - is finally making his Carleton debut with a solo show on Wednesday, August 23rd. Show time is 8 PM. For this date, Keith is selling a $30 general admission and a limited number of  $50 VIP tickets that include a pre-show meet and greet.

Keith Harkin is an Irish singer songwriter and guitar playing minstrel who has been singing his way into the hearts of music lovers since the age of four. His musical talents have brought him across the world from the UK to Canada, to Australia, to America and back, over and over again in his past eight years touring.

While working on his solo career, Keith also has continued to perform as a lead soloist in Celtic Thunder. His role in that band has brought him to write and record a number of his own songs for the show, as well as perform for a vast audience worldwide, including President Obama and First Lady Michelle, along with numerous PBS specials.

When Keith isn't touring or recording, you can catch him at the beach surfing or continuing the gypsy travel life from adventure to adventure. But always with a guitar nearby.

Ian Janes

Sunday, June 4th

Due to demand, we're very pleased to announce that Ian Janes is adding a second show at The Carleton for the live performance debut of his Yes Man album with a special full band show on Sunday, June 4th! Show time is 7 PM and tickets are $20 advanced or $25 at the door.

Yes Man is the fruit of an artist in full possession of his means
- Journal de Montreal

A confident, and soulful, record Yes Man creatively mixes Ian’s deepest influences and experiences. It is a combination of singularly written songs, as well as collaborations with other great writers from across North America. The album includes co-writes with Andy Stochansky (Goo Goo Dolls, Ani DiFranco, Shannon Noll), Jamie Hartman (Joss Stone, James Bay, Christina Aguilera) Lee Ann and Daryl Burgess (Irma Thomas, Colin James, Patty Loveless) and iconic Canadian songwriter, Joel Plaskett.

Yes Man continues his pattern of consistently creating music with depth and musicality. Through every track you can clearly hear the confidence and individuality that comes from experience, combined with the fire and vitality of an artist at the top of his game.

Ian's always been one of the very best talents in our part of the world and while the albums are always too long coming for most of us fans, they always prove to be well worth the wait; at least now the most recent wait is over!

STEVE POLTZ - Poltzy, El Poltzo - Returns!

Sunday, June 11th

If there's one artist on this planet that personifies what The Carleton, at its core, is all about, it's Halifax native and now Nashville resident STEVE POLTZ! The man, the myth, the legend returns to our stage for shows on Saturday, June 10th (SOLD OUT) at 7 PM and Sunday, June 11th (this one) at 8 PM. Tickets each night are $22.50 advanced or $25 at the door. Like we said, his Saturday show is SOLD OUT so if you're going to catch him this year, get your tickets for Sunday's show before they're gone too...

...And if you've never seen him, and you live in Halifax and somehow missed the first 30+ times he's played here before, it's about time you got hip. We've presented well over a couple of thousand artists at The Carleton over our 9 years of existence and we can say, without fear of contradiction, that Poltz is consistently the most mind-blowing of them all (and that's no dis on all the others, believe us).

Editorialize? Moi?

Thursday, June 1st

Astonishingly, it appears that spring is about to arrive just in time for summer! And you know what that means, right? Correct, more construction! The city is ripping up Argyle Street to finally implement the streetscaping project that's been on the planning boards for about a dozen years or more.

Don't get me wrong, this is a much-needed and welcomed improvement to our collective environs but it's going to be a bit of a pain in the butt while it's happening. The powers-that-be have assured us that access to our fine establishment will never be compromised and the fact that we're on a corner will probably make it easier for you to get to us. So, please do get to us! If you make the effort, you won't be disappointed; not by the entertainment, or the food, or the drink.

The good news is the bridge re-decking is pretty much done so you Dartmouthians will no longer be held hostage by insanely expensive cab fares getting to home sweet home.

On another front, our beloved Carletones have decided to wrap their long-standing residency and the next couple of Saturdays will be their last. As most of you know, The Carletones was my idea for a house band. That idea being a collective of some of the best musicians in the city that could be swapped out as those musos left to tour, etc. etc.

So, we'll have another core group of the city's best on tap soon as The Carletones Mark II. Stay tuned to this missive to learn when that'll happen and who will be involved. Trust me, it'll be great. In the meantime, get your Carletones Mark I licks in while you can, the lads will be happy to see you all!

And finally, we'll be announcing some of our main Halifax Urban Folk Festival acts very soon. I'm pretty excited about the reboot of this pretty awesome little event and hope you will be too. Do NOT leave town over the Labour Day weekend!
