Release Day: Paper Beat Scissors - All We Know + BIBELOT

MAY 19, 2017

Music Lovers,

I'm in Montreal for the rest of the month and it is HOT.
Summer seems to have arrived without warning, surpassing Spring like a bat out of hell. As I gaze longingly at the empty public pools that aren't set to open until June, I dream of the lakes and oceans back in Nova Scotia as I sweat profusely on my horse blanket.

You know what else is hot? The new Paper Beat Scissors record. It's out today so have yourself a listen!
FUN FACT: If you've enjoyed Gianna Lauren's latest album, this EP was recorded with the same band at the same studio. It's southern Ontario's version of the wrecking crew. The touring band will be heading over to Europe later this month but before that, people in Ottawa will get a solo performance at The Record Centre on Saturday afternoon.

Jay Crocker's incredible BIBELOT installation opens next week as part of the OBEY Convention, Halifax contemporary sound & art festival. This machine has been years in the making and is an incredible thing to behold. You don't want to miss experiencing this unique, immersive piece of art.

Also, more summer dates announced below. Check it.

All We Know EP Out Now

"Crabtree’s hypnotic voice leads you through each song, mapping out what this new project has made him question over the last two years - accompanied by the word “know,” which appears in every song."
CBC Music

A cohesive body of work that examines the theme of knowing, the EP was recorded mainly in rural Ontario at the House of Miracles with a core band of consisting of Tim Crabtree, JJ Ipsen (Hayden), and Marshal Bureau (Great Lake Swimmers). Long-time collaborators Pietro Amato (The Luyas, Bell Orchestre) and Sebastian Chow (Islands) are joined by the aching viola of Pemi Paull and Andy Magoffin’s alto horn contributions on 'Didn’t Know' with Crabtree adding piano, clarinet, and baritone saxophone to round things out. The EP was then mixed by Sandro Perri (Constellation Records).

"I don’t always realize what is preoccupying me, thematically, until after a project is completed. I was thinking back over the songs, and realized that the word “know” turned up in every song on the EP – more than that, it was in half of the titles, even the Weather Station cover.”

Jay Crocker's Mesmerizing Sound-Art Installation Opens Next Week

As part of Halifax's annual OBEY Convention, and in conjunction with Fountain School of Performing Arts, Dalhousie University, and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Jay Crocker's BIBELOT, an incredible gallery-sized installation, will open next week at the Anna Leonowens Gallery.

Part instrument, part installation, BIBELOT is a self-composing set of sixteen ceiling mounted music boxes with custom-built drives, loops, lights and amps. Creating a sanctuary space that reflects the natural constancy of change, BIBELOT represents a major achievement by one of our nation’s most exciting musical vanguards; a sonic portal of limitless combination that will slip you into infinity.

BIBELOT is the brainchild of Canadian composer Jay Crocker (JOYFULTALK), whose past work has had glowing praise from publications like The New York Times, Globe & Mail, Paris Trans Atlantic, and the BBC. Having relocated to the remote locale of Crousetown, Nova Scotia in 2011 to escape Calgary’s developmental emptiness, Crocker found himself sounding by his lonesome. The revered left-field player/producer/instrument-builder spent the first few years dislocated from his former music community toiling away in his home studio, creating new ways of creating and the results have been nothing short of startling.
